Interior and Safety Minister Kim Bookyum embarked on a one-week business trip to the United States from March 4 to expand cooperation with international organizations including the United Nations and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The aim is to bolster cooperation with international organizations and share Korea’s best practices in public administration and good governance.  

On March 5 (local time), Minister Kim Bookyum met with Mr. Liu Zhenmin, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), and discussed the operation direction of the United Nations Project Office on Governance (UNPOG) which is located in Songdo, Incheon. 

They touched upon key issues including the importance of achieving UN SDGs and UNPOG’s activities to raise awareness on the issue in Korea.  

On March 6 (local time), Minister Kim met with Ms. Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), and discussed a wide-range of issues including mutual cooperation for building global disaster response capability through enhanced role of UNISDR Regional Office for Northeast Asia located in Songdo, Incheon. 

In particular, they had an in-depth discussion on promoting UNISDR’s disaster risk reduction programs in North Korea which is vulnerable to natural disasters, causing huge human and material damage.

Minister Kim, on March 8 (local time), met with Mr. Luis Alberto Moreno, President of IDB, to renew and ink the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in public administration. The newly signed MOU covers expanded areas of cooperation from government innovation, digital government and civil registry to immigration, which is Latin America’s pressing issue, and disaster management. It is expected to contribute to fostering comprehensive and future-oriented partnership between the MOIS and the IDB. 

The IDB has been showing a keen interest not only in Korea’s resident registration, immigration service and foreigner registration system regarding immigration issue, but also in disaster prevention and restoration systems regarding disaster and safety management. 

Under the renewed MOU, the MOIS will carry out various cooperation activities with the IDB such as training programs and workshops for experts and working-level officials regarding the areas of cooperation. 

Minister Kim Bookyum noted that “Through the visit to the United States, I will build a stronger foundation for cooperation with international organizations that are closely working with our ministry, share Korea’s best practices in public administration and explore new areas of collaboration.” “I will continue to find ways to effectively share Korea’s experiences with the international community through bilateral and multilateral collaboration with many organizations,” he added.
